In July 2011 Joe Cornish, the writer/director of the inner-city alien movie Attack The Block (and one half of comedy duo Adam & Joe), spoke at Film4’s Summer Screen at Somerset House. Describing Attack The Block’s style, he cites ‘suburban fantasy’ films like ET, Gremlins and Ghostbusters as influences – and says that he tried to avoid the realism or ‘extreme fantasy’ genres that UK filmmakers are notoriously good at. He also reveals all about the writing process for his film, which involved pitching scenarios to London youth groups as the script was being written.

Nominated in 2012 for: Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer
