Abiss aka Dj Rivias aka Bruno Guerra is a underground portuguese producer/dj and above all one of the biggest music LOVER´S i Have ever knew.
His passion for music started when he was still in momas bely, he told me that every time that she heard a music it made him kick her bely so hard that the only way to stop it was turnning off the music. He also said that, nowadays when he ears her record´s for the first time, (digging for samples) he feel´s a sort of "musical deja vou", because it sounds familiar to him.
Borned at 23 August of 1982 in Caldas da Rainha (Portugal) he started by playing piano (and maybe that´s the reason why it´s one of is favourite instrument´s) with only 6 years old in the ADESO music school.
At the age of 9 he´s mother made the decision to take him out of ADESO school, because he just wanted to play piano and was having bad result´s at the "ordinary" school, but the untouchable passion for music was already there.
Since there as any ordinary 13 year old teenager he started discovering and developing taste for other types of music thru the radio , tv , cd´s , he´s mother´s vynil collection etc....
The way i see it, he just wanted to hear to music no mather what medium reached to him.
While all this process was in progress, he discovered electronic music thru all the styles that you can imagine, was it Hip-hop, Trip-Hop, Breakbeat, House, Techno or Experimental .
At the first "glimpse" he didin´t realised that the future of his life was passing thru his ears, it was only when he saw a dj mixing, scratching and spining record´s that he realised what he would do with his life.
The Path was marked he just needed the tools to move on.
With 15 years old he asked his mom if she could afford a Mixer and a pair of new turntables.
She responded "You know that i don´t have much money but i will make an effort and buy it if you study ", it was the kind of answer that Bruno was expecting ( a trade for a trade) so he compromised and had what he wanted.
The moment in wich he putted his hand´s on it was like he said "being in another planet , a new reality".
He starded by exploring his mom´s records, but it wasn´t enought so he started working in the summer vacations to buy record´s ( many off you may feel familiar with this).
Has the time goes bye he started wondering how the music was created and recorded, he also thought that he wanted to create/produce music.
Meanwhile with 19 he finishes high school and has to make the decision if he want´s to go to the university, but he wanted to study something related to music production so instead of going to university he choosed to went to a Technical course named " Sound Production Techniques" in a school near Evora, where during 3 years he learned all about analogue and digital audio production systems has well studio recording techniques.
With 23 he finished it and came back to his home land with a huge bag of knowledge ready to be unleshead, he basically started producing music with what he had, a mixer , 2 turntables and a computer.
You may Laught if i tell you that Nowadays he´s still producing with a mixer , 2 turntables and a computer, he knows how to combine the better of the two world´s because he has the knowledge to do it.
If you listen to his music you may say that it is Trip-hop , Hip-hop , Instrumental , Electronic whatever but i think it´s much more deeper than that, it´s a huge melting pot of influences that are fused all toghether in an inteligent and subtile way....... He says in his myspace page that all types of music influence him in the creative process and he think´s that´s where all the musical richness becomes.
In fact he has a music called " Eclectic Record" that talk´s about this.
I have been listening to some of his original productions like "Eclectic record "- " 11 th dimension"-" Introduction to what i Do" - " Aonde estão os meus amigos" that are on myspace and also to the outstanding remix that he made of Dj Shadow "Building Steam with a Grain of Salt" (that´s available on soundcloud).
If you ear it you will understand that this guy "drink´s" influences from all the styles you can imagine and he "built´s" epicness around them.
I can´t name any other portuguese artist that´s feeling and creating this type of music .
I had the oportunity to watch and listen to one of is performances , i was amazed with such a musical flavour and energy, it seemmed that a supernova exploded in my head.
