Twenty years ago hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets of Burma to protest the military government. It began as a student movement, but was quickly joined by monks and ordinary people.
It ended in mass killings, with troops firing automatic weapons into the crowd, while other demonstrators were arrested, never to be seen again. Human Rights groups estimate that at least 3,000 people were killed.
One of the organisers of these protests, Ko Aung, was arrested and sentenced to 7 years hard labour, with three years in solitary confinement. He spoke recently to the Strathclyde Telegraph.
