Franz Kafka’s “The Trial,” is the story of a man who becomes indentured to a virulently corrupt bureaucracy by his own obsession over innocence. K’s downward spiral into paranoid delusion seems to take place in an alternate reality from the very first scene. Does K really encounter such bizarre individuals and unlikely events? Or is the “reality” of this story merely a delusional state? A nightmare if you will. Kafka never fully reveals the true nature of Joseph K’s “reality.” The result is often confusing, even disorienting to those participating in Joseph K’s obsession over innocence.

Based on this interpretation of Franz Kafka’s “The Trial,” I felt it best to approach this design concept by utilizing surrealistic and ambiguous, psychoacoustic sounds/spaces to help convey a sense of confusion and paranoia. It is my hope that this blend of discordant soundscapes will not only facilitate feelings of discomfort and insecurity; but that the audience will leave the space feeling as if they have just spent an evening inside the twisted mind of Joseph K.

The cues contained within this set were originally intended for playback on a system capable of multi-channel playback. Thus, playback on a stereo system will result in an altered experience. I hope you enjoy these nonetheless!
