Macapat are traditional Javanese poems, often sung and sometimes accompanied by gamelan instruments in various shapes and forms.
In this version of macapat Durma seven sine waves have been tuned to the pelog scale. Their volumes are controlled by faders on a midi controller. I am supplying the singer with reference tones in the same manner that the gender might in a traditional context (e.g. an andhegan or bawa). Rather than attempting to imitate a gender I am using the faders to generate a soft texture.
While this version can stand alone it's also the first stage of development of a larger piece, in which the computer will bring the tones in and out along with other synthesised parts and effect processing.
