one last song
I have been well aware, throughout my career, how rare it is for a musician to have such a genuine connection with the people who support them. The reaction to the final JM shows have certainly crystalized those realizations. There is little I could do to express my gratitude for this, but if anything, this is a small token. Late one night in Santa Monica I played my friend and long time producer, Jim Wirt, a demo of a song I wrote a few years back. No session was scheduled, but after a couple beers and some laughs we pulled out some microphones and cut it. The next day Jay and Bobby came through and did what they do best; selflessly and skillfully served the song. We weren't making an album, and like the early days there was no label in place to release it. Just friends in a space playing music. I hope you enjoy it.
Wrecking Ball Heart
Paper chain is dwindling
We don't talk much anymore
Everything's forgiven
Fingertips at rest once more
You had your suspicion
I never gave you true romance
In light of your ambition
You stock pile ammunition
Though you never had a fighting chance
Just like an intruder now
You come and leave so quietly
You barely crack the door
Am I just confused
Or did our hearts that beat so wild and free
Forget who they beat for?
Red light just stopped blinking
Tied down but my hands are free
Some nights I still think of you
My digital calamity
Oh you were never real to me
Just like an intruder now
You come and leave so quietly
You barely cracked the door
Am I just confused
Or did our hearts that beat so wild and free
Forget who they beat for?
Ours is a mad mad heartache
And mine is a wrecking ball heart
Ours is a mad mad heartache
And mine is a wrecking ball heart
Oh I
I can't be stopped
Sometimes the wrecking ball drops
I tear this house down to build it back up
Ours is a mad mad heartache
And mine is a wrecking ball heart
Ours is a mad mad heartache
And mine is a wrecking ball heart
Just a wrecking ball heart
Just like an intruder
You come and leave so quietly
You barely cracked the door
Am I just confused
Or did our hearts that beat so wild and free
Forget who they beat for?

Yet another infectious lyric that will be stuck in my head for weeks. I guess i'll just add it to the JM and SOCO collection. Excited for what is to come! All the best Andrew.

I was going to write a short comment about how much Jack's means to me, but it quickly evolved into this:

One of my favorite bands are coming to an end. It's definitely bittersweet hearing this last new song. But I'm fortunate to have seen you guys live three times and have so many memories from your music and shows. I even got to meet Andrew at the last show I went to. So although I'm sad I'm also very thankful for all of the years filled with such amazing music! Thank you and good luck to all the guys (Andrew, Bobby, Jay, and Mickey) in your future endeavors!

Your music will forever take me back to my highschool and college days. Thanks for being the musical scenery to some of the best times of my life. Will miss JM but can't wait to see/hear what you all create in the future!

Andy - thank you so much for making our dream come true when you played "No Man Is An Island" for me to propose to my girlfriend (now my wife!) at the Kansas City show. We both look forward to all your future masterpieces! Lots of love, brother! James & Rachael

You know your music always seems to come at the right time in my life. Not even two weeks after my miscarriage last September. People and Things drops and I relied so much on the sounds of Restless Dream and that whole album to get me to sleep. That now this song just sums up my last year emotionally so perfectly. And while I know you don't write your songs for me or my experiences. It's always been so great to have music that gets me through it all from Soco to JM and now to the new adventure of McMahon. Looking forward to the music that will come in the years ahead.

Ever since I was in 7th grade, 8-9 years ago, i've listened to Andrew's music. Through the happy, the sad, the angry, through my parents divorce, to losing my first pet, all the way up until my father had passed away of cancer. His albums felt as if they lined up with my life, the music, the words, the piano, everything in sync, and no matter how I felt, I could hit play and instantly become coerced with his lyrics. For some time, I've been working on my life now, putting his music aside more yet still having a Something Corporate, Jack's day (which I'm sure all of you fans can relate with.) Being so sidetracked, traveling with my life, I didn't get the memo, until last night. The amount of emotions that ran through me took me all the way back to the beginning. It's like one of those break-ups where you don't really know why, but you know it's for the best in some way. I tried to see if tickets were available, already started planning my trip through southwest airlines, Chicago to California. I would have drained my account just to make it out. Recently diagnosed with a hole in my heart (I call it a broken heart) I felt it break once more knowing that I would never be able to see Andrew and the band's last show. I started to cry, I started to look down at my tattoo I got of his signature on my foot, right above the 11:11, that I had Andrew sign at the Summerfest show in Milwaukee, right after my dad had passed, and my ex cheated on me one last time. And I smiled. There will never be a "Last show" or a "Last song," -throughout the years, and shows, and great words shared between Andrew and I, the happiness, the tears, the reunions, the ten+ hour waiting in line just to be the first fan he would see, getting signatures (http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/388593_292817884073180_2017387059_n.jpg) Being in newspapers telling how great of fans we are with that picture in the link, EVERY DAY i've listened to his music, there will never be a last show or song because the fans will always keep the music alive. And I'm sure all of you can relate to my story, because I know there's been days where you've felt you just couldn't make it any more, and sit there with your headphones in, listening to some old Something Corporate song, and just feeling a rush of relief, and knowing you can make it another day. So, this isn't goodbye Andrew, this is a goodluck and hopes that you have a great life, and know we will always be there to back you up, even if we don't hear from you for a year, or years.

Thank you, Andrew, for this beautiful song, and for reminding me on a daily basis that life is worth living. Jack's will be missed, but I'm super excited for what comes next for you musically.
