Andrea Parkins is composer, sound/installation artist and electroacoustic musician who engages with interactive electronics as a compositional/performative process, and explores strategies related to Fluxus’ ordered, yet ephemeral activities. An integral participant of the New York sound art and experimental music scene, and worldwide – she is especially known for her pioneering gestural/textural approach to her electronically-processed accordion and customized live sound processing. Described as a "sound-ist," of "protean," talent by The New York Times music critic Steve Smith, her laptop electronics and Fender-amped accordion create sonic fields of lush harmonics, noisy concretized disruption, and sculpted/soaring electronic feedback.
Parkins' works include electroacoustic and electronic music compositions, multi-diffusion sound installations, and sound for dance, video and intermedia performance. This work has been presented at the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Kitchen, Diapason sound gallery, and Experimental Intermedia; and arts spaces/festivals worldwide, including Mexico City’s First International Sound Art festival; Museet Samtidskunst in Roskilde; Unsound in Krakow; q-02 in Brussels, NEXT in Bratislava; and Cyberfest in St. Petersburg. Parkins also records and performs internationally as a solo artist and has collaborated with innovators such as Otomo Yoshihide, David Watson, John Butcher, Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, and Lê Quan Ninh, among many others. Her recordings have been published by Important Records, Atavistic, and Creative Sources, and others. On an ongoing basis, Parkins develops and performs her primary project, a series of live audiovisual works inspired by Rube Goldberg's circuitous machines. Parkins has received support for her work from American Composers Forum, NYSCA, the French-American Cultural Exchange, Meet the Composer, Harvestworks, and the Frei und Hanseastadt Hamburg Kulturbehoerde in Germany.
In November 2013, Parkins created a new site-based work as Artist-in-Residence at q-02 in Brussels and is currently performing her solo project in Europe, and with several improvising ensembles that are based in Berlin.
In June 2012, Parkins premiered Austell 1 in Incidental Music, an exhibition presented by Fragmental Museum, NYC: a live 8-channel performance/installation, funneling real-time sound from the rail yards of Long Island City, Queens into a huge reverberant adjacent warehouse space, with sonic interventions from a walking bell-ringer, and Parkins' accordion feedback and amplified objects. She performed a new live audiovisual work, at the December 2012 Experimental Intermedia festival, curated by Phill Niblock, in collaboration with video artist Ana Carvalho and sound artist Ben Owen. She also toured with her solo electroacoustic performance project: with performances in Bydgoszcz, Poland; Verona, Brussels and Paris. Parkins' Faulty (Broken Orbit) was recently on exhibition in Monash, Australia as part of Independent Curators International's traveling sound exhibition, "With Hidden Noise,“ curated by Stephen Vitiello. Her "portable" sound work was part of the Lingua Franca exhibition at Cyberfest 2011, St. Petersburg, Russia. Parkins was invited to perform her interpretations of seven graphic scores by Christian Marclay at the Whitney Museum’s 2010 retrospective festival of Marclay’s work. Since 2009, Parkins has toured throughout Europe with choreographer Vera Mantero's production, "We Are Going to Miss Everything We Don't Need," for which Mantero commissioned Parkins' live score/sound design, and since 2010, Parkins has performed - in the US - her live 12-channel sound design for "Symptom," a performance work by The Body Cartography Project.
