There was one agenda in that jam session: Don't get too comfortable. The idea was to avoid playing anything familiar, and staying away from our favourite techniques, rhythms, licks, scales and modes. If we realised that we are playing something very comfortably, we tried to change the direction.I, Ananth, restricted the entire guitar part to three particular frets, and played all the notes within those frets. This prevented me from resolving to familiar scales/chord progressions and forced me to have a fresher look at my instrument.Dev, on percussion, in spite of his long classical grooming, restrained himself from playing well known tabla rhythms, has managed to come up with new ways to combine tabla and bongo. Listening to the recording now, I'm surprised to see he could anticipate my phrases, even though our style was unfamiliar to each other. This was our second jam session.Jan 25, 2011
