Issiaka Bâ, is one of the most talented and ‘conscious’ Malian rappers of his generation
His stage name is taken from a novel by one of Mali’s most noted authors/historian/philosopher - Hamadou Hampaté Bâ – in order to pay homage to all African cultures. Actually Amkoullel was the nickname of his direct illustrious ascendant, from which he has also inherited the will and ability to harmoniously combine traditional and contemporary global cultures and to promote individual and social responsibility. As the leader of Hip Hop in Mali, Amkoullel is committed to keep this movement positive and respectful of traditional oral culture.
Hip Hop for education, the voice of the voiceless
Amkoullel started working seriously on his rap when his first radio experience at the age of 13 was banned by the auditors. A year later he was organising his first rap concert with his scholarship money. He left to France to study Law (paying himself for his studies in doing the worse night jobs) and released a first album Infaculté loaded with texts against ignorance. In entering the exam room, he realized his life would be torn apart between the Arts and the Law and it was obvious he would rather be the voice of the voiceless on stage rather than in court. Then he released a second album Surafin (‘Bribe’) and toured extensively with Cheikh Tidiane Seck. He also appeared alongside Manu Dibango, Keziah Jones, Rokia Traoré and has notably supported Alpha Blondy, Lobi Traoré and Tiken Jah Fakoly. In 2007 he was offered to go back home and co-run Mali K7, Ali Farka Toure’s record company. He then created his own label Woklo Barka Prod to produce his third album Waati Sera (‘It’s Time !’) that proved to be both a militant opus against Africans’ disdainful self-image and a beautiful harmonious musical blend of traditional African instruments and the most contemporary popular musical genres, arousing the attention of even the most refined audience.
Amkoullel is now touring with his own band mixing traditional and contemporary instruments, known as the first Malian hip hop live band including also two dancers. He founded the first Hip Hop school, the Farafina Club, and the Mali Hip Hop Association which brings together artists, media and professionals. Amkoullel also is the host of Case Sanga, a heavily viewed Malian variety show, like America’s “American Idol”, which brings forth new talent and is gaining in popularity in francophone Africa. In 2009, Amkoullel was honoured at the Mali Hip-Hop Awards three times, booked to headline at the Waga Hip Hop festival and to perform in one of the major Mexican festivals.
Hip Hop without boarders
Ne Ka Mali !! (Mon Mali!!) the new album released in Mali in May 2010 is not only an invitation to discover Africa through the eyes of Amkoullel, but also a call into question the notions of ‘the other’. Rapping and flowing in French and Bambara, Amkoullel touches on vital social issues such as education and African unity. Accompanied by Didier Awadi, one of African Hip-hop’s fathers, and an illustrious compatriot Xuman, Amkoullel presents other regional well-known performers ; as French spoken word artists RIM and CANDIIE put it in the album introduction: ‘Nothing is black nor white, there are always loads of colors in between’.
2010 is the year of internationalization with an international management and a digital record label and distribution. He also appears on international compilations by Nomadic Wax, Afrolution and OIF. The creation of the first Koterap musical BAMA SABA launched at the famous French Avignon festival is making a stir as well as his participation to a poetry and literature festival that brings him into the intellectual French media. 2011 starts with the infamous Festival in the Desert, and launches a promising international carrier as Amkoullel, invited by American universities and students organisations committed to education and social change through Hip Hop, tore up the best clubs in NY and LA before selling out his first gigs both in France and the UK.

Avec son quatrième album, Ne ka Mali ! !, Amkoullel offre une vision large de ses univers musicaux : de nouvelles sonorités hip hop mêlées aux instruments qui font la renommée musicale du Mali, le taama, le n’goni, les percussions ; du ragga au kuduro, du slam au jazz, cet album traverse les styles. Ne ka Mali ! ! (Mon Mali !!) n’est pas seulement une invitation à découvrir le Mali, l’Afrique, vécus par Amkoullel mais également un appel à se questionner sur les notions de l’autre. Lorsqu’il aborde, en français et en bambara, des questions comme l’éducation, l’unité africaine, il s’impose comme chroniqueur de son époque. Entouré de l'un des pères du Hip Hop Africain, leader du mouvement Sénégalais, Didier Awadi et d’un de ses illustres compatriotes Xuman sur le titre Mali-Sénégal, Amkoullel présente d’autres featurings avec la crème du Hip Hop Malien : Les Tata Pound,Lassy King Massassy, Fanga Fing, Master Soumy.... Parcours d’un rappeur adulé à Bamako
Issiaka Bâ, alias Amkoullel, s’est imposé comme l’un des rappeurs les plus doués de sa
génération au Mali.
Son nom d’artiste Amkoullel, l’enfant peulh, est tiré du titre d’un roman d’un des plus grands écrivains
maliens, Amadou Hampaté Bâ. Le rappeur choisit donc ce nom de manière consciente, pour rendre
hommage à toutes les cultures africaines.
Trois albums
Amkoullel rencontre le rap très jeune. En 1993 il organise son premier concert de rap puis multiplie les collaborations et crée le groupe «Kouma Guerya», littéralement la guérilla de la parole. Son premier album, Infaculté, sort en 2002, avec des textes dérangeants contre l’ignorance. En 2003 sort le deuxième album, Surafin, (‘pot-de-vin’). Puis Waati Sera (‘Il est temps !’ ), est autoproduit avec le label Woklo Barka Prod en 2007 et milite contre l’image dévalorisante qu’ont les Africains d’eux-mêmes. Le « son » Amkoullel, des collages musicaux composés d’instruments africains traditionnels, de jazz et de rock se définit et suscite l’attention des plus avertis.
Le style Amkoullel
Dès le début, loin de se limiter au rap, Amkoullel s’ouvre à d’autres styles de musique et fusionne sans toutefois s’éloigner des rythmiques traditionnelles. Il intègre alors la troupe de Cheikh Tidiane Seck, participe deux fois au Nice Jazz Festival où il côtoie des stars comme Manu Dibango, Keziah Jones, Rokia Traoré et fait des prestations avec Alpha Blondy, Lobi Traoré ou Tiken Jah Fakoly… Autour de lui, il y a les rappeurs militants Tata Pounds, Lassy King Massassy, Doudou Masta tous très appréciés au Mali. En octobre 2008, il fonde le groupe Amkoullel en version live, évolution évidente pour des compositions musicales de plus en plus complexes : un show à l’énergie puissante où le “beau gosse” du hip hop au Mali a su s’entourer de deux danseurs fascinants.
Positiver l’image de l’Afrique par la culture
Qui a dit qu’il fallait partir pour réussir ou entreprendre ? Doté à la fois d’une énergie et d’un charisme étonnants, cet artiste a aussi créé la première école de danse hip-hop du Mali (Le Farafina Club), une association pour le Hip-hop au Mali, qui réunit artistes, Djs, graffeurs, danseurs. Il est également l’animateur vedette de Case Sanga 2, la Star Academy malienne, qui développe sa popularité en Afrique francophone. En 2009, Amkoullel obtient trois trophées au Mali hip hop Awards : Meilleur single de l'année - Meilleur clip - Meilleur featuring . Il est programmé en tête d’affiche du festival Waga Hip hop en 2009, figure sur les compilations de l’OIF et d’Afrolution.
Le lancement international En 2010, Amkoullel signe des contrats de management et de distribution numérique internationaux : Ne Ka Mali !! et ses vidéos sont diffusés à travers le monde. La création du premier Koterap musical BAMA SABA lancé au festival d’Avignon et la participation d’Amkoullel au festival de poésie et de littérature Etonnants Voyageurs suscitent l’intérêt de nouveaux media et professionnels et élargissent encore son public. Enfin 2011 démarre sous les meilleures auspices avec le Festival au Désert, une première tournée américaine qui confirme l’énorme impact d’Amkoullel sur scène et auprès des milieux universitaires et enfin des concerts à guichet fermé en France et en Grande Bretagne !
