I've loved music my whole life. It was my first passion and is infused into all my earliest memories. I'd often be found by the old cabinet style record player at 6 and 7 years old, playing my Mother's records and making playlists(!), and doing countless shows for invisible guests in our loungeroom whenever I could, just because it made me happy. In my early teens, I progressed to making audio letters/montages on cassette about my life(complete with personalised voice-overs) by recording stuff off the radio and my now growing record collection, all on a cheap portable double cassette deck stereo, and I'd send these to friends overseas whom, I'm sure, thought it was all very odd. By the time I was 17, I'd found my way onto the 3RRR-Fm airwaves in Melbourne, presenting weekly alternative music programs in the middle of the night, and by 19, I was also managing my own record shop in Smith St, Collingwood and Djing in the City's underground clubs. I moved to London shortly after to work in music distribution and to Dj. While I was there I also acted as Triple R's London correspondent, hanging out backstage at gigs with my recordable Sony Walkman and a mic.
It was 1988 and acid house was ushering in the Summer of Love, and after years of championing indie/alternative/80's electronic music, once I'd heard my first acid house track (Voodoo Ray - A Guy Called Gerald) I knew I was listening to the future, and I've never looked back. Upon my return home two years later I promoted and Dj'ed at some of the earliest warehouse/rave parties before moving on to nightclubs, continued hosting shows on Triple R and 3PBS, and in 1994, was headhunted to become a show host on Melbourne's brand new dance station, Kiss FM, where I stayed until late 2009, doing evening shows at first hosting shows such as Blast Off Sound System, Sunday's "Afternoon Tea" with Peter McNamara, and the daily Breakfast timeslots for two seasons, "Chicks on Toast". I've also helped promote many events over the years, including "Egg" Melbourne's first ever deep/soulful house weekly event, which opened in 1993-1994, when Melbourne was still a city dominated by techno, and "WOW", Welcome To Our World, with Dj Eddie Mac.
I've been blessed to watch the dance scene grow from its very humble beginnings to become the juggernaut that it is today, and I've seen many trends and people come and go over that time. Some of the highlights of my career have been being one of the first Djs ever to perform at Sydney's Opera House (2001), playing in various clubs in New York, London and Chicago, being voted Best Female Dj in Australia's then Rolling Stone equivalent Juice Magazine(2002), winning a Dj competition that took me to play at the opening of BarCode in Times Square(2002), attending the Miami Winter Music Conference in 1996 when it was still very small and industry-only, playing all the early Tropical Fruits parties, having fans create a genre called "Millar House" and chanting it on the dancefloor during my sets, playing at the infamous Car Park Nightclub in Byron Bay in its heyday in the late 90's, and of course, the very best part has been playing alongside and becoming friends with many of my musical heroes, and meeting all the truly amazing, very gifted and big-hearted people I've made friends with along the way.
As I celebrate my 28th year in the music business, I am still as passionate about sharing music with others and about being a DJ as I was when I started out. I largely attribute this to the fact that I never sought to become a career Dj as others have. I've also seen how being flavour of the month has ruined so many hopeful's dreams of true and lasting success in this industry, and besides that, I teach yoga, meditate, have a profound connection to the field of vibrational medicine - my main focus is sound healing - and I do a bunch of other stuff with my time that keeps me grounded and (I hope) "real". Thanks for visiting my page. More mixes, new and old, will be added in the coming weeks and months. It's great to have your company. Please know I'd love to connect with you if you are feeling my vibe.
