New on the Notwist's label, Alien Transistor comes a new album from two veterans of the famed Weilheim scene. Carl Oesterhelt is best known for his work as Carlofashion and with bands such as Ms John Soda, while Johannes Enders is a veteran of Tied & Tickled Trio, as well as his own Enders Room project. For Divertimento Fur Tenorsaxophon Und Kleines Endembe the duo adopt a musical policy that seems to restlessly shift between fiercely modern classical styles and more polymorphous, jazz-influenced sounds. It's not too commonplace to hear a saxophone leading an ensemble as is the case here, but Enders is an extraordinary player, exhibiting a versatility and level of musicianship that sees him glide fluidly through the schizoid soundscape of this suite. The percussive elements are key to the record's unique sound too, occasionally evoking Moondog's strange homemade arrangements, while in other moments absorbing the vocabulary of the Indonesian gamelan. Excellent. BOOMKAT
