About
Alexander Astorga Monge, better known as Alex “The Funk” Astorga was born on January 9th 1990 in San José, Costa Rica.
Despite his young age, he began to make his way within the local electronic music scene by DJing in venues such as Club Vértigo, Lubnan, La Tulipana, Home Sushi, Blue Lounge, Club Ocio, Barcode, Xpi and Seelebrity.
In 2009 the passionate and talented young DJ was invited to play at The Grooviest Place 2 B, a two-hour show hosted on the now legendary FM station, 911 Groovy.Also, he debuted in one of Costa Rica’s famous electronic music parties, Back to Basics. His DJ set received many positive reviews from his colleagues and general audience.
In 2010 he was part of the lineup that opened for Jay West, at Club Vertigo.
Along his short career, he has had the opportunity to share decks with other local talents such as Vladimir Durán, DJ Sweetbo, Kenny da House-Head, Spitfire, Logo!, Louie J and Zoster, among others.
He’s beginning to take his first steps in musical production, having released a couple of tracks online.
About his influences, he says: “I’ve always had passion for Disco and Funk music. The musicians of that age are the fathers of the sounds of today. They are my inspiration”. He cites many bands, producers and DJs from Kerri Chandler, DJ Sneak and Mark Farina, all the way to Pet Shop Boys, Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, New Order and U2.
