For guitarist Alexander Gil, it began with Devo’s “Whip It.” “I only had the 45 and would play it over and over again. I don't even remember how I got the record or who it belonged to but it was there and I couldn't get enough of it.”
But that was just the beginning. Alexander decided he wanted to make music himself. “After about six months of guitar lessons I started making music on this vintage AKAI reel-to-reel 4-track recorder with a mid-level Ibanez guitar my dad purchased for me at the local music shop. It was all trial and error really. There was no manual for the recorder but I managed to start making music. I would use all four tracks and layer the guitar. From there I started recording the punk rock songs my friends and I were making. One mic for each musician. That's all we needed.
Alexander credits The Edge from U2 as an inspiration. He created an instrumental that had some of The Edge’s guitar sound mixed with his own resulting in a unique and truly personal sound of his own.
Before long, Alexander was a key member of bands. Knowledge Threat was a punk rock group playing the Los Angeles club scene. “We even performed at two prisons which were interesting gigs because everyone was seated because they couldn't move. We also got an opportunity to tour Mexico City and surrounding towns. That was an amazing time.”
He joined Cargo Solo which was more focused on success and recorded two EP’s while playing numerous venues with critical acclaim.
Currently, Alexander plays guitar for Dead White Underbelly and Louder Than Bombs, a Morrissey/The Smiths tribute. He also played for the wonderful and up and coming Latin sensation Linda Lopez. Through her, he’s been able to perform before much larger crowds and venues. He also writes his own acoustic rock music under the name Hearses.
