About
The story of Alex Overcast truly begins in the mid 90's. It was then, at age 7, that he was given a small casio keyboard that had a small drum machine on it. He would play with it, without the aid of structured lessons, in the after school hours. It was then that he recorded it to tape - the little bits of unstructured melody and low quality drum loops - until the tape had reached it's one hour limit. One saturday night, in the same time period he was listening to FM radio, and heard some of the very first editions of Chris Sheppards pirate radio and immediately fell in love with house music - although it would be years before he would sit down at a computer and create his own productions. Around the same time he bought his first cassettes (Green Day's "Dookie", Ace of Base "The Sign", and some others). In these early years Alex never really took seriously the idea of actually becoming a musician, he was routinely being kicked out of music class for not wanting to play the tiny glockenspiel xylophone's. Years later, he failed miserably at learning to play an accoustic guitar.
Fast forward to 2006, in his second year of college, he bought a brand new Imac and quickly noticed the GarageBand app. Not having any other release of boredom, he began putting loops together and in later sessions used a midi keyboard to record melodies and basslines. These first recordings were terrible. They clipped, had a serious over use of effects, and didn't show any regard to the rules of music theory. At some point, Alex took to the internet and did some serious research on music theory and audio production techniques. Later recordings in 2008 show a tendancy toward a heavy kick drum in 4/4 time and simple but powerful basslines on the 1/8th notes. In 2008, after amassing quite a collection of house and electro-house, Alex bought his first DJ setup - a pair of direct drive turntables, a mixer and a serato box. After learning how to create mixes, he played at house parties and in 2009 played his first nightclub gig. Somewhere around this point Alex Overcast purchased Reason 4 and an Oxygen 49 midi keyboard, and everything changed. He began creating productions with powerful sound, well put together arrangements, and interesting dynamics.
Fast forward to 2011, and the music of Alex Overcast has shifted from electro-house into a more sophisticated blend of tech, prog, deep and minimal house and techno. He started the year by performing a DJ set at Gomp NYE in Edmonton, and then mid-way through January performing the opening set for Bohemia Cafe's "Pyjama Party" with headliner "Tolgar". After this he moved briefly to Victoria, BC, playing numerous private parties on the island. Not forgetting those early experimental days, he enjoys putting his raw unfinished tracks on this soundcloud page during various stages toward completion to truly show the evolution of ideas from one simple beat, to a fully mastered original mix. Recently his original mix "Float" was featured on the Stretford Dogs Podcast (Manchester UK). As well, his original track "Traded Spaces", is forthcoming on beatport, along with the remix by Drkwtr.
Alex Overcast continues to work constantly on new material. He is known for a "sleep when your dead" work ethic, innovative sequencing and automation techniques, and a very spacious and lush feel to the music. His productions usually feature a heavy kick drum, 4/4 time signature, lots of percussion and electronic noises, and wide stereo imaging combined with reverb on melodic elements to give off a big room feel. As a DJ, he focuses mainly on creating a mix which tells a story, with a definate yet smooth progression utilizing music from various genres.
