About
A local import, Alex Butler was born and raised in Launceston, Tasmania. Alex knew nothing of dance music when he first washed ashore the mainland in 2003 and was thrust into the dance scene by an older brother. He instantly took a shining to the sounds of Trance and Techno. Alex became a frequent club hopper and would often travel the city with friends visiting 3-4 clubs in a night chasing the best DJ sets Melbourne had to offer.
In 2006 Alex would finally put his hand to mixing and purchase a DJ’s faithful, a pair of 1200’s. Playing his first Gig at Tunnel in 2007, Alex was bitten by the bug and now knew that DJ’ing was the way forward. Later in 2007, then under the alias Alex DB, Alex would enter the Elevation DJ Competition that would then see him gain a residency at the club. Alex’s sound stood him out from the crowd, playing a blend of Hard Trance basslines and percussive Tech Trance, Alex’s sets were well structured and every set guaranteed something the punter had never heard. This saw him support international acts such as Dave Joy, Alphazone, Carl Brown, Brisk and many more. Alex also played regular guest spots at Illusion.
With the rise of Hardstyle sounds, the decline of uplifting Hard Trance and Alex’s dislike of the reverse bass he decided to change his mission as a DJ through a focus on finding the perfect beat to match Alex’s love of good quality tracks and tunes that make you hit the dance floor. During this time Alex stopped playing out and started the search for his own sound.
Whilst searching for “The Alex Butler Sound”, in 2009 he was given the opportunity to jump behind the decks for Hard Kandy and vent some steam in the side room. Alex accepted the gigs, offering him a side project to release the dirty, phat bass lines that still run through his veins from old hard trance days in the form of Electro. Alex is a side room staple at Hard Kandy and now has a dedicated following for his crazy side room antics, smashing tough electro and favouring the wobble basslines, Alex draws people from main room to the side room to see what next he will deliver next.
In early 2010 Alex found himself attending more events that focused on the sounds of the bush through doofs and club events featuring DJ’s of the psy, techno and progressive persuasion. It is here that Alex would find himself at the closest point to the search for his sounds. Alex is now a dedicated progressive DJ with psy influences and has worked and reworked his sound to find what he deems to be the perfect blend. Taking influences from Day Din, Neelix, Interactive Noise and Normalize just to name a few, Alex builds a set that can take you through every emotion of progressive and psy. Alex’s energy behind the deck is strong, mixing with a smile on his face and an energetic bounce in his stance Alex takes command behind the decks and influences the crowd to get involved in the music.
