Alec Pritchard (AKA On The Cheap) has been DJ'ing since 1997, having acquired his first pair of decks as a 13-year-old with his paper-round money in his pocket and a mission on his mind. Trance and Techno pioneers of the 90's UK rave scene, Mark EG & M-Zone, had provided the influential springboard for an insalubrious junkie-like vinyl habit and a need to get decks and mix records in order to channel the innately effervescent energy of his personality.
By the turn of the millennium, Alec's obsession had led to the acquisition of over 600 records, as he spent every penny towards wax, depriving himself of sweets & candy, toys and fashionable clothes in the process. The craft had to be kept fresh: more records = more ideas... it is a vicious circle that only a fellow vinyl aficionado could ever begin to understand.
DJ'ing in a large marquee in a field near Gloucester on New Year's Eve 1999 was the first chance he got to play out his heady mixture of hard-edged Progressive Trance and deep, tribal Techno via a 2 hour session to a crowd of 400+ punters. One year later, turning his hand to a more refined sound of Deep House, Tech House & Techno paid off with the help of a few good demo tapes that netted a string of bookings in bars and clubs in Bristol, including a 2 hour set at Thekla.
In 2002 Alec hit University in Leicester to study for a Music Technology Degree, as he began to venture into music production. For the next 4 years he was DJ'ing every week in a multitude of different venues across the city, running several club nights and smaller, chilled out bar sessions. One size did not fit all. Playing in such a wide range of environments pushed his sound into greater diversity as he was spinning anything from Nu-Jazz to Dub, Disco to Breaks, Deep House to Tech House and Techno to Electro.
IDM and Electronica styles (a la Warp Records, Skam, Planet Mu) also came into the frame during this period. As he was producing music in this vein on a regular basis, so too did this become a significant element of his sound on the decks throughout the mid-late '00's.
Since getting his degree in Summer 2006, Alec became a digital DJ and by August 2010 his entire vinyl collection of approximately 2,500 records had been painstakingly recorded and added to his vast digital library of over 30,000 tracks. Alec now lives in Newcastle and continues to spin Dub-Infused House & Techno and has been steadily developing his own unified concept of sound, pulling together all of his influences with the Dub.Tech.Disco.Vibes DJ Mix series.
More recently, Alec has been pushing the envelope with the Cement Mix series, which is shaping up to become the main vehicle for his regular DJ Mix output. You can check it all out here - there is more to come, so keep checking back!
