Mexican label Akbal Music has become one of the continent’s leading labels since inception in 2006. Steered by DJ and producer Robbie Akbal, releases have encompassed deep and tech leaning house music from artists like Audiofly and Cozzy D, with fans including Dusky, Maceo Plex and even Hot Chip. Next up, label boss Robbie teams up with Miguel Puente for a new EP that comes complete with a remix from Mobilee man and Your Mama’s Friend boss, Marcin Czubala.
Mexican Miguel Puente is part of the new wave of house producers taking cues from the past but injecting their own modern take on house and tech. To date he has released on esteemed labels like No 19, Foss and Jones’ Hot Waves and more, at the same time as touring he globe and laying down his infectious sets everywhere from Brazil to Barcelona, London to Switzerland. For this release his partner is Robbie Akbal, someone who himself has been around since the nineties, playing across the globe and forging his own house sound as well as A&R great talent for his label. As well as getting support for his music from DJs like Laurent Garnier and jay Tripwire, Robbie is also a member of Audiofly’s Supernature family.
First up for the pair is the heavyweight bump of ‘Woman You Want’. The drums are raw, the percussion energetic and Cari Golden’s vocals are indeed golden. They add sexiness to the sounds around them whilst shape-shifting pads add plenty of warmth and depth.
‘I Couldn’t Help It’ is lazier and more louche in its grooves. The drums bump with a pleasing thud and the synths dart and dance about in lively steps. Most standout about the track, though, is its moody, tight bassline. Sure to unite the dancefloor into a thriving mass, it has dynamism to spare.
Polish producer and label head Marcin Czubala tackles ‘Woman You Want’ and takes it on a much tripper ride. Popping sounds and spritely snares dance as if on hot coals and the synths are that bit thicker and more elastic. The original vocal remains untouched and adds even more life to the already vivacious foundations Czubala has laid down.
This easy to love release is likely one that will take Akbal Music to a much wider audience than the one it already enjoys in Latin America.
