Project VGM The home for Project VGM's music!
Duke Moirai's theme for Project VGM. As he's described on the project's blog (http://project-vgm.blogspot.com):
"Moirai is an intelligent man, versed in various subjects and languages from his studies in neighboring Wesdrow. He's a skilled mage, specializing in wind-type spells. He knows that he's quite smart, but when amongst people, he doesn't like to show it, for the comfort of the people around him. He doesn't want people to think he's a know-it-all but knows that most already believe he is. He hates how he has to make "rightful" decisions for the dukedom, even if the actions required are not just and are brutal."
I tried to blend strong militaristic elements (snare/trumpet/marching tempo) with grace and humility (piano/harpsichord/cello)... and a little bit of the fun stuff (bass)! I really enjoyed writing this - hope it sounds as cool as the character does. <3

The beginning reminds me of Chrono Trigger somehow. Very beautiful! :)

I like the chord progression :D Brass, Bass and piano work is especially well conceived throughout the piece.

Really like i agree with the trumpet tremolo however, it gets a bit irritating and detracts from a really lovely piece. Love the harmonic changes and the very unexpected switch when the string section coms in. Subbed you.

Sooo many beautiful little sounds at this point, great piece. I imagine you with a poncho playing the trumpet part for this.

@seronoise: Thanks for the feedback! I'm happy that the sample at least has vibrato, but the rate is a great point. The only automating I did here was volume/velocity control, some EQing and effects - definitely could be utilizing the technology more!
As for how this thing came to be, I jotted my ideas into a score first (it helps me get a feel for what I'm doing). I pretty much clicked everything into Cubase and fine-tuned the idea there, using samples that came with the program (except for the harp patch, and the piano parts which are live recorded.) I tried my best to use the character description as a guide for what to do - heroic instruments, hints of drama and tragedy inspired by his tragic past, harpsichord for sophistication, airiness since he's a wind mage... you get the idea! I probably spent 20% of my time actually writing it and 80% mixing and trying make it sound decent.

To add a little criticism, I'd say the trumpet could use a little more control. The way it always starts strong, and reaches its vibrato at the same time, and has the same vibrato speed for all notes makes it somewhat jarringly obvious that it's synthetic. Some of the more elegant parts remind me of, say, Phantasy Star Online and Final Fantasy XI. Nice!

Man, brilliant. What's new? Hah.
Curious: what process did you take to approach writing this, aside from starting with the character description? Where did you pull the samples from? What is your audio suite of choice?
