About
It all started with a Danset and everyone’s hand-me-down records! She found the volume switch and fulfilled a deep desire to block out the country / cajan music wafting down from above. At around this time Ahkoo also discovered the delights of playing Pinky and Perky at 78 rpm! The ultimate in cheese! Perfect for the Oldskool crowd!
Two indisputable life-changing musical influences for Ahkoo were Yazoo’s Upstais at Erics and Hazel O’Connor’s Breaking Glass. It was these two albums that got her well and truly hooked. Fast forwarding to the age of seventeen, the teenage angst years, Ahkoo performed in heavy rock / metal bands. Following on from… and some gigs later she ventured into live sound engineering. During this experience Ahkoo rekindled her passion for Electronica, with the likes of Yello, The Orb, Juno Reactor, Eat Static and Orbital. They, along with many others opened her mind to infinite possibilities. Inspired, she sought out the React label’s monthly samplers.
For reasons unknown even to Ahkoo, she was assimilated into the corporate Borg, losing direction as the cerebral implants took hold, leaving just faint glimmers of sound far in the ether.
Breaking free in 2002 she began to write her own material as well as DJ-ing on internet pirate radio stations. She relished infusions of Progressive, Electro and Breaks.
Her most played tracks included Steven Sharp - Dancing in the Dark, Andrew Friendly – The Bump & Grind and Kissy Sell Out – Her. Ahkoo played Revenge, Honey Ibiza, RBar, Pride Street Parties, Kruze, The Marlborough and The Church (Hard Dance Live PAs).
During this time Ahkoo worked on several collaborative projects including Tin People, B.E.S.D. and Tribal Editor, writing music score for production libraries. She incorporated her own pieces into DJ sets, which very soon became a full live PA, bringing a whole new dimension to her sound.
