Chicago is the birthplace of House Music, a danceable blend of R&B and electronic club music, seamlessly mixed by DJs. It was a mainstay in late 1970s and early 1980s clubs like the Garage and the Warehouse--the club that gave the genre its name. House went global in the late 1980s and is the forerunner of a host of modern dance music styles including trance, electronica, liquid funk, techno and EDM.
The old House clubs are gone now. But the music is still celebrated here. Tomorrow at 63d and Hayes Drive in Jackson Park, the massive Chosen Few House Music picnic kicks off. Named for the group of pioneering House music DJs called the Chosen Few, the yearly event draws 30,000 devotees. To discuss the picnic and House music, Chosen Few DJs Alan King and Wayne Williams are in studio.
