Keenan Boyne aka Aequitas of Aequitas Veritas Productions is a twenty-three year old boom-bap hip-hop producer from Aurora, Ontario. Boom bap describes the bass drum pattern that can be found in the real roots, and old school hip-hop tracks.Boyne claims that there was never a day in his life that he didn’t want to be a musician. This unique young talent is turning the heads of some of the boom bap genres original 90’s artists.
A producer of instinct, Aequitas has an exceptional flair for creating catchy songs that leave the listener moved by the raw emotion within them. “I think of my tracks like movies for the blind. I think about what I am saying, and make scenes for your ears.” says the Canadian native and founder of Aequitas Veritas Productions. His dream of being a freelance producer is already underway, and he has invested much of his time to expanding his knowledge and expertise at Metalworks Institute of Sound & Music Production. In 2009 Aequitas successfully collaborated with Copywrite and Jakki Da Motamouth, two of Ohio’s largest underground indie acts, to produce their still unnamed track. “I got a hook-up through my boy Symbolic, we met in Oshawa. I was sent the verses from Ohio” he says of the introduction. It is Boyne’s versatility that has landed him recognition within Toronto’s hip hop underground.
Music is not a new passion for Aequitas however: it wasn’t until he hears Nas’s album “Illmatic”, that he was inspired to produce music. Aequitas humbly claims that “I couldn’t have gotten this far without the infallible support my family and friends.” He has been producing boom bap beats for the past eight years, learning and defining his craft.Inspired by such hip hop legends as Pete Rock, DJ Premier, and Large Professor, Aequitas strives reinvent the boom bap genre and bring it into a more modern light. When asked who he would like to work with in the future, he excitedly replied “Buck Wild, Pete Rock, Pharoahe Monche, or Q-Tip.”
Aequitas left us with this advice for aspiring hip hop producers, “Just keep learning and defining your craft. "Be more eclectic musically, and this will create a great template to follow in the future.” His broad tastes have evolved his music, and advanced his success remarkably. The world can expect great things from Boyne in the years to come.
