SPECTRAL CATHEDRAL is an algorithmic composition created in SuperCollider. All of the pitch content comes from a fixed array of frequencies based on the timbre of bells. The fundamental frequencies are repeated at the octave (100Hz, 200Hz, 400Hz...6400Hz), so some of the harmonics overlap and clash. Thus, each bell has slight variations in timbre. In this presentation, you will hear sixteen loops through the algorithm. In each loop, the program chooses an area of the array from which to draw frequencies, the number of notes to be played, and a rhythm. All elements will be based on this information; the elements include a sustained chord played at the beginning of each loop, bells of varying distance between harmonics, a ghost-like flute sound, and a rapid trickling that articulates all of the array's frequencies. At the end of the loop, the program will choose a new section of the array. As it moves higher in frequency, everything occurs faster, and as it moves lower, everything occurs slower.
