THE BOHEMIAN B BOY
A DJ, a fine wine merchant,a sneaker junkie and a family man walk into a bar...insert the sound of a record scratching to a halt coupled with puzzled stares. A motley crew of personalities it would seem but this is really just the description of one man and one man only . Adam Speechly. This cast of characters play the various roles in his creatively self formed life. DJ Adam " Pooky " Speechly is the creative force behind this wild operation. He owns and runs his beloved Adam's Fine Wines , which incorporates it's own " Beat Bodega " recording studio , trades in high end sneakers and streetwear and is heavily involved in the documentation of the history of our modern dance and street culture. It's unclear as to whether he runs the shop by day and DJ's by night or whether he is really just moonlighting as a wine merchant. ( It's fair to say the top hat of the many hats he wears is one of a music man.) Looking at his shop there are signed records on one wall , fine wines on the others and sneakers hidden in every nook . It is a gonzo laboratory of music, style, culture and business. " Wine upfront and gear in the rear. "
Born and bred in his beloved Heswall ( H Town - birthplace of a certain John Peel )on the Wirral peninsular (or golden ghetto as he wryly refers to it), he realised early on that with the arrival of hip hop, and the newly emerging dance cultures that this was the only path for the rebellious budding DJ. Despite early skirmishes with the real world he began marching down his musical path in 1988 at age 17 with the purchase of his first pair of Technics and prized Gemini Jazzy Jeff edition mixer. Although it must be noted he had his first Mcgregor twin turntable setup some 3 years earlier doing school disco's and under 18 events. Having abandoned these unfulfilling episodes, he arrived with his crew including newly crowned DMC champ DJ Trix (his earliest inspiration) at the more appropriate pasture ,Birkenhead's pivotal Defhouse and Bassment nights, and Liverpool's Mardi Gras club. Loving the open music policies on offer coupled with the newly created craft of the scratch DJ he set off on his own open minded path which he still treads today with the same love and enthusiasm. With virtually no genre left untouched he constantly explores new sounds and regularly dives back into his vast collection
Pooky also spent nearly three years on Juice FM with some of the most eclectic weekly mix shows the country ever heard and although he loved the people ,he got chucked off for playing music that was just too ahead of it's time and having too many ideas ..haha.
Pooky's seven year low key legendary residency at Liverpool's Camel Club 1997 - 2004..where it was a lock out every week . A pioneering night that encompased hip hop, reggae, drum and bass and pretty much any genre with what Bambaataa (who Pooky recently had the chance to warm up for ) as the FUNK . He was also instrumental in the UK as one of the first DJ's to incorporate cd's/ samplers etc into his open minded journeys when most of his local scene looked down on his forward thinking style..It's all about what comes out of the Speaker boxes !! And look what those peeps are using and playing now. Pooky don't sleep so don't doze on his delights..Contact him via above facebook
