About
Acryl is a Russian techno DJ living in Saint Petersburg. He started djing in 2000 and spent first half of 00s in Ekaterinburg while performing jungle/drum'n'bass sets under a different alias, managing to represent his own perception of the style in the majority of appropriate night clubs of the city, at various one-time events and in other Urals towns – preferring rather jungle, rolling and liquid funk than techstep or hardstep. It was music filled with smart rhythmic patterns, lovely melodies, deep bass and positive feeling.
It appears that all those jungle things became his first real love amongst wide variety of dance electronic music, developing into five years of jungle djing. However, that first love was not the only one – during those years he was also digging another music (including non-electronic, of course) but in particular – techno music. In the end of 2004 he starts to collect techno vinyls, and in 2005 he begins to perform his first 4x4 sets in Ekaterinburg as Acryl. In the end of 2005 he moves to Saint Petersburg where he continues his DJ activity by now, performing in various clubs of the city, continuously working upon the sound, concept and technique of his mixes. His musical concept can be described generally as constructing balanced, dramaturgically sequenced and self-contained piece of music out of improvisation with seemingly different vibes yet having some common emotional, acoustic and stylistic criteria.
To Acryl, the quality of music has always been more critical than its release date, thus he spins tunes released in different years, however with new vinyls prevailing. For a number of years Acryl has been remaining a jealous ideologist of analogue sound as itself, of vinyl plates as an artifact, and of analogue as a paradigm. But this is not an astigmatic fanaticism – digital technologies are used in conjunction with analog sound when they are applicable; he has been using an effect processor for quite a long time in his sets. And with that device, the process gets even more intriguing; mix is initially composed of unique tunes, however the result is quite different than just a total of those round-shaped summands, and the processor allows to, kind of, modify the time-exposure and diaphragm, play with focus, control the depth of field, superimpose dense layers of sound jam, or just freeze some moment of music. Warm vinyl crust is complemented with crystal cleanliness and elasticity of digital processing, and all those things weld together to produce techno fusion, with time starting to flow in every direction and many events taking place between steady hits of rhythm.
