It soon became clear that evicting the protesters at 5:00 am on the morning of Tuesday May 17th was a bad, bad idea, and Spanish authorities had a crash course in what is known as "the Barbara Streisand effect". The outrage at the eviction was such, that that very evening a crowd of well over 12 000 had taken over Puerta del Sol, and decided to stay. The few huts and tents of the night before grew into a small town. From this point on, nothing, even outlawing the occupation, could keep the citizens out of the square.
