On the morning of Monday May 16th, Madrid woke up to a strange picture on its main square. What would become known as "Acampada Sol" was in full swing, with organisational assemblies taking place in public. At some point, after objections by the police to the tent which the protesters had erected without permission, an urgent assembly was called in order to decide how to approach the problem. Since it was held in the open, it soon turned into a massive public rally.

Reglardless of the legal status of the occupation and the infamous tent, early next morning, at 5:00 am, the riot police would charge and evict the 50 or so protesters sleeping there. The following day, on May 17th, the authorities had over 10 000 people protesting in Puerta del Sol.
