AbSynth is a multi-media one-woman show conceived by mezzo-soprano Abigail Fischer, uniting commissioned works by various composers into one larger dramatic project for voice and electronics. Each composer has his own approach to the collaboration between voice and electronics, and each contributes differently to the dramatic relationship between the human character and the synthetic. For example, Nico Muhly's Mothertongue uses a symphony of prerecorded and manipulated Abby vocals to create a sea of sound on top of everyday sounds such as eggs frying and shower-taking, whereas Caleb Burhans uses the looping of his own voice as the background. Kevin McFarland, well-known as the cellist is the JACK Quartet, uses low-fi synthetic sound to reflect her synthetic epiphany. AbSynth has been performed in varying lengths since 2006, in locales from John Zorn's Lower East Side venue- the Stone, to Brooklyn's Galapagos Art Space, presented by American Opera Projects.
