Åbäke - Music For Motion Pictures
2010
Åbäke, the swedish word for a large and cumbersome object, has released his debut album via Record Union. Everything you are about to hear (with the exception of the track Through) is written, produced and performed by the Swedish one man army Rikard Jönsson in the cities of Malmö, Milan & Mumbai between 2008 and 2010. The influences of Air, Trent Reznor, Efterklang, Philip Glass and Four Tet has resulted in these 51 minutes of instrumental pop, ambient, mid-fi soundscapes. The title "Music for Motion Pictures" reflects the view that Åbäke want people to have when listening to this album, it's a collection of fragments to a bigger picture with lots of possibilities to let your own mind set the scene.
"I am very happy with the outcome and it feels great to finally release a full length album that I have done almost entirely myself" says Rikard and continues "many of these songs are bound to different locations and memories, hopefully they will also create new ones for other people". The album is full of small surprises and details, for example is the noise in the beginning of the song "Fragments" taken from an old AC fan in the rural districts of Mumbai during a day when Rikard was lying sick in his hotel bed. Both the songs "Heart, heart, heart" and "I think of you" are based on natural rhythms such as heart beats and waves while the song "Through" features the only external collaboration on this album with Oscar Berggren who co-wrote the song.
Åbäke gained much attention when the Portishead posted his cover of their song Roads on their blog a couple of years ago and this is just a natural continuation on a journey that has been going on mentally for a lot of years.
