About

Nkechi-da-LYRICL

"Music is the vernacular of the human soul" LyricL says, and she is fluent in many musical idioms. Lyricist, rapper and mentor, LyricL lights up mics and stages with her performances. Her eclectic catalogue spans Hip-Hop, Spoken Word, Jazz through to Afro and Broken Beat with a soulful edge and stirring grooves.

An often sought after and keen creative ally, LyricL has featured, recorded and toured with a range of talented musicians and producers including MJ Cole, Nathan Haines, Mark De Clive Lowe & Bugz In The Attic. She has also supported Izzi Dunn, The Roots, Omar, Incognito, Big Daddy Kane, Xantone Blacq and Ty.

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Lyric L's early and enduring musical influences came from home. Her father loved African jazz, gospel, High Life, Oriental Brothers and King Sunny Ade. "He used to entertain us when we were young by making human beatbox, chest tap-drum sounds and playing his hands as wind sounds ... plus my Mommie dances and sings in her own key of happiness to this very day. That vibe and energy continues in my current works."

Family chatterbox and entertainer, basketball player and now respected lyricist, LyricL channeled her creative energy by writing and performing, entering music competitions and later honing her wit in rap battles.

After earning her well deserved recognition and respect as one of UK Hip-Hop's leading female MCs, LyricL propelled into the Broken Beat circuit with dancefloor classic, "Loose Lips."

The “LyricL Mixtape Vol.001” mixed by DJ Pelt (Secton 13) showcased LyricL’s honesty and musical heritage from club classics to broken fusions.

Solo debut, the lush and seductive "Mesmerized (Dreams)" (2005), (produced by Mark DCL) had critics enamoured with her "sophisticated sass" (Turntable Lab). Follow-up single "Ever (After)" in October 2006 accompanied a full concert at the Jazz Café, Camden complete with her own 10 piece band.

LyricL continues her global excursions in movement and sound writing for the "Jazz ReFreshed" Compilation LP (2009) and working with Japan’s finest Kyoto Jazz Massive for "Override & Fly." Collaborations with San Francisco’s Capital A and Australia’s Nathan G are in the works.

Her long-awaited debut album is currently being mixed in Atlanta by DazIkue (BB Boogie/Bugz In The Attic). LyricL promises, “a refreshing new outlook on spoken word hip hop,” a myriad of musical styles (Heidi Vogel, Kevin Mark Trail and DJ Spinna feature) and unapologetic originality. “Lyrical dexterity and openness to innovate, elate and debate,” she declares. Be prepared to get LyricL!

PROVERB: "When someone shares something of value with you and you benefit from it, you have a moral obligation to share it with others."
