In the case of Goya, Paul had recorded the vocals first, then I was charged with adding some 'appropriate' sounds. These were layered on top of the voice but I got the volume of the sounds too high. Once several layers of bells and toy instruments were added plus the fuzz guitar, I couldn't get the voice louder or the other instruments quieter. All reel to reel bounced recordings, or cassette to cassette in MAPs case, had to be very carefully mixed as you were developing the piece otherwise this sort of imbalance would occur.

The problem here, as with all the pre-portastudio recordings, is that the overdubs are recorded on top of each other, by bouncing the previously recorded track to the other track on the reel to reel machine, and adding an extra recorded layer at the same time. All recordings were therefore in mono, and although you could do a retake if things went wrong, once the recording was done, and another layer added, you could neither alter the earlier tracks or adjust the relative volumes of different layers.

Black shadows in the contemplative chair.
The yellow spoons of his eyes.
Success grows on public branches;
The complicated life of compromise.
The rust of the court, hollow in the desert,
Sponsored by the neglect of kings,
The spoon-fed rats.
At least his hands are free.
The oak blaze of colours,
The Spanish bell,
The yellow sketches of his sincere cartoons.
The sun blasts onto their rich colours.
The distorted skulls of the poor.
Belief in revolution sheltered in every face.
But the dream is caught with its hind leg cocked,
As the inquisition comes sniffing
And the animal crouches in the politics of the ruling class.
From the faces of battered ham
To the ghost-like innocence of his young royal sitters.
The bohemian clerk.
He searched for shadows in the desert,
Away from mists of people,
With the devil shrieking in his ear.
He found the milkmaid with delightful flesh,
Black stones in a dark river,
The rough shawl and cloth bonnet,
The apricot smile, rustic lip,
Peach shavings from a cloud. - aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaabbbbbb
