This week Ewan's unhappy... everyone has an iPhone 4 or 4S now. Massive network subsidies mean anyone willing to take a reasonably expensive monthly contract can buy one. The exclusivity, the prestige and his image as a connoisseur are being eroded away. He asks why the market doesn't offer more exclusive devices above the price point of a top-end iPhone (noting Vertu's place in the market) and we discuss how brands and styling could return mobile devices to the status symbols they once were. Rafe also points out the economics behind manufacturers' decisions about the devices they market and explains materials science may be the answer in the not-too-distant future.

This episode, thank you 361 Degrees Podcast, reminded me that I buy a mobile or clothes or whatever for me and my needs in the first place.
I think one's entity is defined by actions (verbal and non-verbal) and not by one's tangibles, though economy wants us to believe it is.
Concerning the topic, I think Nokia has done a good job with the N8 and its colours. You could even choose pink (maybe I would if it were a cool-down pink). The only problem here lies in the uniform hardware.
The Lumia 800 Batman Edition may be another example. In addition to the slightly and discreet varying look, it should have had to have some hardware extras like 32 GB mass memory or the like, manufactured in a special location (Assembled in Britain, France, Finnland etc) under a more severe quality assurance system.
Maybe the whole talking about being different by using different (looking, manufactured) hardware makes no sense anymore if Ewan presents his apps. I think they will definitely make him different and unique.
