1 track, 3.11 1888Media on January 04, 2012 22:04

Modern string / jug band music from a collective known as SANKOFA.

"Sankofa" is a word in the Akan language of Ghana that translates in English to "go back and get it" (san - to return; ko - to go; fa - to look, to seek and take. It is often associated with the proverb, “Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi," which translates "It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten".

"Sankofa" is visually represented by an Adinkra symbol of a bird with its head turned backwards taking an egg off its back. It symbolizes one taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress through the benevolent use of knowledge.

Sankofa band members include Canadian singers Allison Russell and Ndidi Onukwulu, percussionist Sule Greg Wilson and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Dom Flemons of the Carolina Chocolate Drops.

Special guests on The Uptown Strut include John Sebastian (singer/founder of the Lovin' Spoonful), pianist Professor Louie and guitarist Paul Rishell.
