Title track from Hayley Reardon's debut album on Kingswood Records.

    Where The Artists Go:

"At the end of eighth grade, my social studies class was assigned a project on identity. We were told to draw ourselves exactly how we saw ourselves, and to write adjectives describing how we view ourselves on the inside of our bodies and adjectives describing how we think that others view us on the outside. We were then paired up with classmates to discuss why we drew and wrote what we did. I got paired up with a boy that I didn’t know very well. I had no idea that he could draw, but it became clear to me what an artist he was the second he handed me his piece of paper.

He had drawn his body all in black and white, then coming up out of his head was an explosion of thoughts, colors, symbols, and ideas. He put all of his adjectives describing himself inside of this explosion, rather than inside his body, as we were assigned. He talked to me about how he saw himself as “un-societal,” and explained that in his drawing, one of his hands is open, while the other is clasped tight to reflect the things he is open to and the things he can’t bring himself to accept.

Inside of his body he only wrote one word...human...as if this was the only thing he really knew about himself because he was still figuring out who he was, and what this colorful explosion on his paper might someday become.

I went home that day and couldn’t stop thinking about Paul and his drawing. I was so taken by what an artist he was and the fact that I had sat in class with him for eight years and had no idea about this explosion of light and color he had bubbling up inside.

So I wrote this song for him, and since then, I’ve made it my mission to look for the explosion of color inside of every person I meet...because everyone has a little artist in them somewhere...it's up to us to care enough to uncover it." Hayley Reardon (June 2012)

    Where The Artists Go
(music & lyrics by Hayley Reardon/ASCAP)

    There's a place you know
    where the artists go
and honey colors line the sky
    you're alive inside
    trust your thunderous mind
    always chasing, searching
    always something new to find

and someday the walls of this town
    are gonna cave in
    and oh,
    this explosion inside you
is gonna burst through your skin

    Chorus
    'Cause you see the beauty
with one hand open and one clasped tight
society don't know a damn about this life
and when they ask you for your name
you reply with all you know
    saying I,
    I am human
    I am human

    There's a place you know
    where the artists go
and nobody holds an unseen light
nobody's masked, there's no stolen skin
    cause you're proud to belong
    where nobody fits in

    Chorus
