Melanie "Teflon Dawn" Thompson was born in Houston, Texas to a divorced mother of two (2). She was introduced to music at an early age by her mother who owned three (3) record stores and her musician brother. She spent all of her young life playing in the record stores and watching her brother rehearse his band in their home. One night when she was four (4) years old, she attended an Ashford & Simpson concert at the Houston Music Hall with her mother and her life was changed forever. When she and her mother were invited backstage to meet the couple, Nick Ashford lifted her up and sat her on his knee and hugged and kissed her while Valerie played with her and sang. At the time she loved the group because her mother loved them. She was bit by the music bug forever....and not as a listener only.

She loved all of the music of the late '70s and early '80s and made the decision to be a musician when she first saw Sheila E. play drums for Prince. She was always encouraged to perform and when other girls were asking for dolls and makeup, Melanie was asking for a drum set. She always had a distinct love for all things music and spent many hours with her brother while he worked toward a degree in music education. She discovered that she always knew what worked to create a distinct sound. Her rhythm was impeccable. She played the drums in the
marching band throughout high school and was even chosen as Band Sweetheart one year. Melanie was appreciative of the honor but was still focused on the music.

After completing school and marrying she became a mother and realized that she had an even greater love for her family. Music would have to wait. After divorcing and moving to Atlanta in 2004, she decided to nurture her first love of music. In 2007 Teflon Dawn was born and with her the rebirth and passion for music and creativity. She continues to create and nurture her first love and spends many hours seeing life through music.
