BandPage: Your Music on Facebook

This 101 was kindly contributed by RootMusic. If you'd like to contribute a 101, just get in touch!

Finally Facebook has real BandPages! Yup, Seriously. Whether you’ve just started your first band and want to link up with fans or you’re on the cusp of world fame, we’ve got what you need to get your music — and more — on Facebook. Upload music, photos, videos, link to your Twitter and blog as well as post upcoming shows onto today's biggest social network.

Before you start

There are two main ingredients to getting your music on Facebook: your music and Facebook. If you haven’t already created a Facebook fan page for your music, you can create one here, and link it to your personal Facebook profile. You can start uploading pictures, add your band members, and write a little blurb about yourself.

Next, open a SoundCloud account, and upload all your tunes. It’s a fast, free and easy to use way to get your music online. But you already knew that!

Want to see it in action before you get started? Sure thing. What kind of music do you like? Hip Hop? Check out Kanye West’s BandPage. Rock’n’roll? Check out The Doors BandPage. Country? Check out Dolly Parton’s BandPage. Electronica? Check out Diplo’s BandPage. Indie? Check out The Walkmen’s BandPage. We could go on and on — but let’s get started instead.

Overview

First things first: log into RootMusic.com. We use Facebook Connect, which means no new passwords or usernames to remember. Select your fan page, and you’ll be guided to the content editor, where you can upload all your songs via the SoundCloud player. Add everything about your band to your new BandPage: your videos, website, Twitter feed, blog, and more.

Want to pretty up your page? We got you covered. For $1.99 a month (or $19.99 a year) you can add some pizzazz to your page. You can post a custom banner, change up your fonts and add some color to your page.

Go to facebook.com/bandpage to add the tab to your fan page. Make BandPage your default landing tab so new fans can listen to the music first thing. (It’s under settings, which is under the status box on your wall.) Use your custom listn.to link to link directly back to the BandPage and send all your fans straight to your music.

But wait! It gets better! Did you know you can play videos in the music player? Click the “Add Sound” button, select “YouTube” and copy and paste your YouTube video links into the field.

You can also send out automatic updates to your wall every time you upload new music, shows or videos without even thinking about it. Activate Autoshare under the settings tab, and updates will be posted to your wall. (And don’t worry about spam — updates only go out once every 24 hours per item.)
