How to Set up a Remix Contest on SoundCloud

Remix competitions aren't just fun for fans, producers, and artists... they can also be for marketing! The right competition can introduce your music to a whole new audience, and they don't have to be difficult to set up.

Before you start

It's best if you've got a dedicated landing page for the contest somewhere on the web. It doesn't have to be too fancy, but you should list the details, such as information about the stems, judging criteria, and prizes, all in a place people can find again. The next few steps will show you how to add the stems and the submissions to that page.

Overview

First, upload all of the stems to SoundCloud. Higher quality usually works best for remixes, so if you have WAV, use it! You can add the original sound for reference too. Uploading all of the sounds at once will automatically create a "Set" on your SoundCloud page. Make sure you've set the sounds to be downloadable, or if you want to sell the stems, that you've included a Buy link. You can see, as an example, the stems from a remix competition hosted by Röyskopp.

Start a group on SoundCloud for the Remix submissions. Be sure to include information about the contest in the group info, such as whether the submissions should be downloadable. We recommend you make the group moderated, by unchecking the "Automatically approve sounds" box.

Now you can embed the stems and the group dropbox on the landing page you set up! To embed the stems, just click the Share button at the top of the set, and copy and paste the embed code. You'll find the embed code for the group dropbox on the group page.

After you've gotten those embedded, you can embed the group player so that new submissions will appear on the landing page. Click the Share button at the top of the group page for that embed code.

That's it! If that was too easy and you're still looking to do more, you can find even more tips in a blog post we wrote about remix competitions.
