Customizing the Buy and Download Buttons on Your Widgets

The text on the buttons of embedded widgets is pretty straightforward: if the sound is downloadable, there’s a “Download” button, and if you’ve added a buy link, there’s a “Buy” button. If you want to spice it up, you can change the text on those buttons, and even use the “Buy” link for something completely different.

Before you start

The techniques guide is available to users of all account levels, but if you want to use the “Artwork” or “Minimal” player widgets, you’ll need to have a premium account. Also, this only applies to the “Buy” and “Download” buttons on widgets embedded on external sites, not ones on SoundCloud.com, and will only work for sounds that have a buy link and are set to be downloadable.

Overview

When you hit the “Share” button on a player, you’ll see a long HTML embed code you can copy to embed the player into your own page. Copy and paste that code wherever you want the sound embedded.

To change the text of the buttons, you just need to add some text to the embed code. After the sound’s permalink, which appears twice, just insert the text &text_download_track=download button text&text_buy_track=buy button text. The bold text has to stay exactly as is, but you can change the italicized text to whatever you want!

Here’s an example where we changed the download button to read “Free download!” and the buy button to read “Purchase!”

Using these same tricks, you can use the buy button to send people to a page with more information, or to donate on PayPal, or even to Flattr the sound!
