Each year, the A.V. Club (www.avclub.com) picks 25 songs that they want to see covered. Bands are presented with the list, pick their chosen song and go to The Onion office in Chicago to record it. The next band can choose from the remaining 24 songs. And so on. At the end of the year, readers vote on their favorite recordings.
Wye Oak have been invited to the A.V. Club twice now - once to cover The Kinks' "Strangers" and most recently to play "Mother" by heavy metal outfit Danzig. If you aren't familiar with Danzig, it's Glenn Danzig's latest band, his previous being The Misfits and Samhain. And if you haven't heard "Mother" before, well, here is an amazing version by Wye Oak, a folk-rock duo from Baltimore.
You can buy the Wye Oak 7", or electronic versions of Strangers/Mother here, from Merge Records:http://bit.ly/z7ARwd and you can see the full A.V. Club interview with Wye Oak and their live recording / channeling of Danzig here http://avc.lu/yImnon
